In 2026, enterprises are realizing this is a false dilemma.

Internally, we think of this as AI V1 and AI V2.

A brief history of Conversational AI

AI V1: predictable, reliable — and rigid

When we talk about AI V1, we’re referring to most conversational systems built before the rise of large language models. These systems excelled at control and repeatability, but struggled with flexibility.

They typically included:

1. Speech recognition without context

Grammar- and statistics-based speech recognition worked well for command-and-control and transcription — but with little understanding of meaning. This often resulted in awkward interpretations.

One of our long-time favorites:

“Marie Curie” confidently transcribed as “Mariah Carey.”

Both iconic. Rarely interchangeable.

2. Deterministic natural language understanding

While often labeled “machine learning,” many NLU systems behaved more like sophisticated pattern matchers. Small variations in phrasing could break them:

Ambiguity was another weak spot. Ask a classic assistant to “play Bad Company” and you might get the band, the album, or the song — with little attempt to clarify.

That said, AI V1 had major strengths:

And for enterprises, those strengths mattered.

AI V2: powerful, adaptive — and risky

AI V2 represents a massive leap forward.

Speech-to-speech models don’t just hear words — they understand intent.

GenAI-powered assistants can answer open-ended questions, reason through ambiguity, and respond naturally across countless topics.

But these capabilities come with trade-offs that are now well known:

In low-stakes environments, these risks may be acceptable. In regulated, enterprise-grade systems, they are not.

Where we are today

For most enterprises — especially those operating under regulatory, compliance, or brand constraints — the current state of the art is hybrid architecture.

Rather than replacing AI V1 with AI V2, organizations are using deterministic systems as gatekeepers, paired with more flexible GenAI components where appropriate.

The challenge? Keeping all of this coherent, testable, and reliable at scale.

There’s no silver bullet — but for now, this is the only viable path to production-grade conversational AI.
